Abstract
In this chapter we endeavour to unfold the picture of the vulnerable teenager and the interplay of influences which bring parenthood too soon. Learning our gender roles begins in the cradle, and the messages reinforcing these come crowding in from all sides, in every aspect of society. Learning about sexual functioning involves reliable teaching and guidance, and this is not always available. Even when young people have sufficient knowledge, most appear to be unwilling to put it into practice, or unable to make the connection between knowledge and use.
