Abstract

The Christian tradition is often characterised by a deep division between the earthly and the spiritual realms. Often people are conceived of as locked into the earthly realm with all the needs, wants and desires of earthly life while aspiring to live in the different realm of the spiritual. So the kinship and human equality people are to recognise before God is something that has meaning and significance within the spiritual realm. It is as if the very recognition of others as ‘neighbours’ is already to situate our relationship with others within this spiritual realm.
