Menstruation and Sexuality: New Rules for Old

  • Sophie Laws

Abstract

The avoidance of heterosexual intercourse during periods is often viewed as a crucial part of the playing out of women’s oppression. Many theories of the origin of menstrual ‘taboos’ imply that all men are deeply repelled by the idea of sex with a menstruating woman. Men in ‘primitive societies’, supposedly closer to nature, are believed to be acting out what all men really feel if they avoid sex at this time.
