The Common Place Books
Burns compiled two Common Place Books: the first, begun in April 1783 when he was living at Lochlea, was abandoned in October 1785 when he was at Mossgiel; the second, begun in Edinburgh on 9 April 1787, and sometimes referred to as the Edinburgh Journal, was abandoned in 1790 when he was employed as an exciseman and weary of working Ellisland, ‘this accursed farm’ (CL, 358).
