Behavioural approaches to social work derive from the work of experimental behavioural psychologists. Thomas (1968, 1971) in the USA and Jehu (1967, 1972) in the UK were the first significant interpreters of the psychological literature within social work. Hanson (1983, pp. 142–3) maintains that although therapeutic uses were being made of the basic psychological theories in the 1950s, it was not used in social work until the 1960s when traditional social work came under radical attack.
