Abstract
The UK construction industry is flexible in the procurement methods that it can offer and, quite often, the simple categorisation of the procurement options described in this chapter may not be followed exactly. Whilst it is currently accepted that ‘design’, ‘management’ and ‘construction’ can be viewed as discrete parts of the procurement process and, for that reason, categories of procurement, and construction contracts have been classified around these three distinctions, it may be that in a later period these ‘discretions’ may not seem so separate. Combinations of design and construction, design and management, other variations in the simple, distinct relationship of client, consultants and contractors do now occur as each project’s circumstances develop or dictate.
