Abstract

Since 1948, but especially since 1967, powerful forces have been acting on Palestinian society in both directions, for and against change. Such forces would have arisen in any case, as the society adapted itself to inevitable membership of the industrialised world, but occupation by Israel has distorted them and created particular, often painful tensions.
