By 1985 a shorter working week, earlier retirement and greater affluence amongst those in work had all led to a substained growth in leisure time and in the ability to pay for the goods and services with which to enjoy it. Somewhat in contrast, unemployment had risen to unprecedented levels, offering millions plenty of time, if not the disposable income, to enjoy their unsought opportunity for leisure activities.
