Abstract

It is very difficult to give an account of the genesis and chronology of the short stories collected in the volume Fizzles (Fr. Foirades).1 The five Fizzles, written between 1950 and 1960, were published in the French magazine Minuit in 1973; in 1976 four editions in volume of the Fizzles were published: Pour finir encore et Autres Foirades (Paris: Editions de Minuit), For to end yet again and Other Fizzles (London, Calder), and two American editions by Grove Press and Petersburg Press respectively. Each of the four editions arranged the stories in a different order, with the result that there can be countless readings of the text.
