Abstract

Turkey’s emergence as a full and responsible member of the Western alliance represents one of the most significant political and stragetic developments in recent history. The initiation of large-scale US aid to Turkey in 1947 under the Truman Doctrine and Turkey’s admission to NATO in 1952 ushered in a new phase of US foreign policy that made communist aggression anywhere a matter of US security, There also began a relationship between the United States and Turkey that has developed into a strong bond of increasing confidence and respect.
