Abstract

Bangladesh is a nation of 105 million people huddled together on a territory of 55 600 square miles (144 000 square kilometers). It is the ninth most populous country in the world, only recently pushed down from the eighth rank by Nigeria. It is also one of the poorest nations on earth. Ethiopia is the only country, among those for which estimates are available, which is consistently ranked below Bangladesh in terms of per capita income.
