Abstract
Engels wrote the ‘Letters from Wuppertal’ in early 1839 at the time of his first contacts with the literary movement Young Germany. The ‘Letters’ appeared anonymously in Gutzkow’s periodical Telegraph für Deutschland during March and April of that year. At approximately 7500 words they mark the first substantial published work undertaken by the 18-year-old author and the first of his original prose writings to appear in print.
