This study is concerned primarily with Caudwell’s ideas, and their relevance for the sociology of literature and cultural theory. Nevertheless, in order to ‘understand’ Caudwell’s work in the fullest sense of the word we need to examine his intellectual background and its relationship to the cultural matrix and key historical experiences of the twenties and thirties.
