Abstract

The pituitary gland is situated in the sella turcica in the base of the skull. It consists of an anterior and a posterior lobe, which can be distinguished anatomically and which have different functions. It receives its blood supply from both the hypothalamus, via the portal system, and the internal carotid artery, via the superior pituitary artery. The cells of the anterior pituitary are surrounded by sinusoids.
