Abstract

This only occurs in ovulatory cycles. The pain starts with the onset of the menstrual flow, or shortly before, is most severe on the first day and may last 2 or 3 days. The pain is ‘colicky’ and occurs in the lower abdomen and may radiate to the back and inner thighs. The teenage girl with spasmodic dysmenorrhoea appears pale and sweaty, and reflex vomiting may occur.
