Abstract

The Keats family was doomed to fall victim to the scourge of nineteenth-century society, consumption or tuberculosis of the lungs. Keats’s mother died of the disease when he was fourteen. His brother Tom died of it in December 1818 after being nursed by John throughout his illness; and John died of it at the age of twenty-five in Rome.
