Abstract

James was born in Edinburgh Castle, the son of Henry Stewart (Lord Darnley) and Mary Queen of Scots; he received a formidable education from his tutor George Buchanan. When his mother was forced to abdicate on 24 July 1567 he became King James VI of Scotland; when Queen Elizabeth died on 24 March 1603 he was proclaimed James I of England.
