Charles Hamilton Sorley was born in Aberdeen and educated at Marlborough. He joined the army in 1914 and was killed near Loos. He left thirty-seven complete poems. Marlborough and Other Poems (1916) was successful in the 1920s but afterwards neglected. Robert Graves and Edmund Blunden judged him one of the best poets of the First World War.
