James Elroy Flecker 1884–1915
James Herman Elroy Flecker was born in London and educated at Uppingham and Trinity College, Oxford. He was in the Consular Service at Constantinople and Beirut, but tuberculosis forced him to retire to Switzerland, where he died. He published several books of verse, including The Golden Journey to Samarkand (1913). His exotic verse-drama Hassan, staged and first published in 1922, was then widely considered a masterpiece; it remains a curiosity of literature.
