Abstract
The rise of the GDR to a position as one of the leading sporting nations of the world has been an astonishing achievement for a small country of only 17 million inhabitants. Such an achievement is based on talent spotting and training of young athletes, as described in the first extract below. The second passage explains in more general terms the various factors to be considered when looking at the way people spend their leisure time.
