Best of both worlds? Transvestite lives
Case studies are quite common in the professional literature dealing with transvestism and transsexualism whereby individuals receiving medical or psychiatric treatment are utilised to illustrate more theoretically directed accounts.1 In many instances, however, the reader is not left with any mental picture of the individuals under scrutiny but instead is presented with a list of characteristics which have often been predefined as revelant to the root causes of their behaviour. A comparison of various aspects of the literature results in an amalgam of contradictory factors. The result is that we are left with little information concerning the transvestite as an individual.
