Theoretical perspectives on father-daughter incest

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Women in Society ((WOSOFEL))

Abstract

Incest and the incest taboo are topics which have attracted the attention of writers from all areas of the social and medical sciences — anthropology, sociology, psychology, and psychoanalysis have all contributed to a vast body of literature on the subject. It is not within the ambit of this chapter to address all the issues and questions raised by this literature; discussion will necessarily be limited to the professional literature which has a direct bearing on the way that social agencies in the twentieth century have understood and dealt with child sexual abuse.

This article was first published in Breaking the Silence: A Report Based upon the Findings of the Women Against Incest Phone-in Survey (Haberfield, New South Wales, 1985). The Power Theory was first printed in New South Wales Department of Youth and Community Services Child Sexual Abuse Trainers’ Package, Sydney, May 1986.
