The government of a country such as Britain is responsible for the provision of a range of services which sometimes people take for granted. Health services, education, the police, defence, the upkeep and maintenance of roads, the provision of housing — to name but a few. Some of the services are the responsibility of central government and some of the local authorities. Even those that are controlled by local authorities are subsidised by grants from the government. These services do not, however, come free and we pay for them through taxes and rates. These charges are levied on individuals and businesses.
