Trade Unionism and the State: Some Recent European Developments

  • Chapter

Abstract

Most discussions of the relationship between trade unionism and the state — and in particular those analyses which employ the notions of corporatism or of political exchange — focus on the national linkages between unions and governments. Social relations within the workplace are, from this perspective, far removed from the domain of politics. Reciprocally, students of shop-floor industrial relations typically see little reason to consider the state as a relevant object of enquiry.

Paper presented to a conference of the Association d’Economie Politique, Montreal, 23–24 October 1987, Syndicalisme et Societé: Rapports Nouveaux.
