If there was one great impediment to the success of early teetotal ambitions it was the indifference, and even hostility, shown by religious bodies towards total abstinence. Even when large numbers of ministers and members supported the temperance cause, as was the case in the Methodist churches, the official hierarchy either was uninterested in the movement or feared it as divisive. But, as we have already shown, there were many individuals who were working for changes within their churches as they spread temperance principles among their congregations. It was to the tenacious loyalty of these men that the teetotal movement owed its revival.
