Abstract
The election announcement on Monday, 11 May, came as no surprise. Well before the local council voting on 7 May gave the psephological go-ahead, Mrs Thatcher and her Downing Street spokesmen may have allowed expectations to rise beyond the point of no return (see p. 41).
