Clause Elements and Sentence Types

  • N. F. Blake

So far in this book I have dealt with grammar in relation to relatively simple sentences which are statements or declarative sentences. In this chapter we shall consider other types of sentence. But before that we must look at the various ways in which the clause elements can be combined in a declarative sentence. As was pointed out in the last chapter, the elements in a clause are subject, predicator, object, complement and adjunct, and it is these elements which can be regrouped either to vary the style or to indicate different sentence types.
