Abstract
The first years of the 1980s have been characterised by a resurgence in the use of the factory occupation in industrial disputes. Various occupations have attracted large amounts of media coverage, much of it sympathetic, and have obtained overwhelming public support in the communities in which the occupations have taken place. The sit-ins at Lee Jeans in Greenock and at Lovable in Cumbernauld are just two examples from this period.
