Abstract
Real-time systems are, and probably will be for some time to come, developed in environments which are not conducive to the efficient and reliable production of the software element. Perhaps the biggest thrust of the 1980s has been the recognition of the importance of software design and development tools under the banner of software engineering. It is absolutely vital that designers are provided with the necessary tools and are capable of using them to the full. It is important for the designer to be aware of the features of such tools required specifically for real-time systems. This chapter considers the conventional tools in the light of the specific needs of such systems. . .
