After a year in power the regime had squandered the goodwill it had enjoyed in the early days among some sections of the population. When it failed to come up with any coherent policy, its leader’s personal motives for usurping power became manifest. The regime became extremely sensitive to any criticism, and clamped down hard on opponents, real or imagined.
