Abstract
Together with its ally France, Britain declared war on Nazi Germany on 3 September 1939. After a brief campaign during which Poland was defeated, the Germans settled down to build up their military machine undisturbed, biding their time until the spring of 1940, when they suddenly launched an attack on Belgium, Holland and France.
