Abstract

Discussion of Gilbert and Sullivan is incomplete without consideration of the original performance conditions of the opera, for the Savoy Operas were not written for general publication but for performance by a particular company at a specific theatre. The size and format of the Savoy Theatre, together with the dramatic and vocal resources of its company, influenced the style of the scores and libretti and thus indirectly still influence the performance style best suited to the operas.
