Abstract
The main aim of an agency placement is to provide the aspiring entrant to social work with a protected and guided experience of contemporary social work practice in a particular service setting. The individuals who provide the protection, guidance and control we term ‘supervisors’ or ‘practice teachers’. They are invariably social workers themselves, who are allowed to undertake the responsibility because they are qualified by training, expertise, preparation and endorsement by agency management.
