Given that better business decisions need better information systems and that information technology has become a necessary means of bringing those improvements, the remaining question is, how can the transition to better systems be achieved? One cannot mutter “magic” in the dismissive manner of the amateur breed of managers who, baffled by the first computers, considered that any knowledge of information technology was somehow demeaning. Nor can one call round the corner and buy all that is needed, which amounts to the same thing. Neither those who think that their management decision to acquire a computer is the most difficult part of the project and that the remainder is the easy ‘nitty gritty’, nor those who are so daunted that they do not know where to start the exercise of system planning, have IT projects in proper perspective.
