Part of the book series: The ‘New Approaches to Care’ series

Abstract

The people who care today and who will care tomorrow will determine the type of care that is provided for mentally handicapped children and adults. The trends to move from institution to community have given impetus to major changes in the field. Specialist professions have developed their skills towards new areas and more disciplines have become involved. Boundaries have become extended and developments and progress have been made. But profound handicap is still regarded as being the Cinderella of the caring professions. As so little is known and understood, there is still a tendency to regard the care for this group as being occupational rather than educational.
