Abstract

Nurses are now talking wisely of problem-solving approaches to care; but unless we actually define each patient’s problems as individual ones, the exercise remains theoretical. Physical needs are obviously basic and important. They tend to be fairly easy to identify and act upon. It is easier to ignore, or at least defer, the more difficult non-physical problems, using vague terminology to cover our lack of care in this area. Just what does ‘psychological care’ or ‘reassurance’ mean? Aristotle defined pain as an ‘agony of mind’, not simply of body; so nursing care must be planned for the patient as a whole human being.

From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs.
