Abstract
Much of Conrad’s time and energy went into the writing of short stories for magazine publication, since he badly needed the relatively high remuneration that this mode of writing provided. Short story is an elastic term in the Conrad canon, embracing pieces that range from short and slight tales to novellas as lengthy and important as ‘Heart of Darkness’. Nearly all were originally published in a great variety of British and American periodicals. Conrad collected twenty-five of his stories in a series of six volumes, and a further four stories were collected in a posthumous volume.
