The National Campaign

Abstract

Because it was a nationwide event, the Euro-campaign tended to be judged as though it was a general election. On those terms it was a fiasco. Most of the activities that characterise a Westminster contest were carried out in some form — but on a scale so different that comparison became absurd. What was lacking among the politicians, the public and, above all, the media was any sense that the election was deciding anything important.
