Abstract

Dear Peter, Of course I don’t mind setting forth my views for you on Sir Nicholas Henderson’s valedictory dispatch on Britain’s Decline; its Causes and Consequences. As for doing it without a fee, well that’s all right — I know how hard up we are. I haven’t been deflected by the media storm over the leak of Henderson’s memo to The Economist, but I hope you won’t mind if I offer my reply to the weekly press as well. It’s not that I lack confidence in the ability of the FCO’S resident Deep Throat to place it there for me, but I have found that reliance on such channels sometimes leads to unfortunate delays in publication.
