Overseas experiments in the home care of the sick

Abstract

The NHS is presently under critical scrutiny both from its advocates and its adversaries. A powerful section of the medical profession has declared itself in favour of private medicine, while the Government of the day has expressed interest in insurance-backed health schemes which, if introduced in Britain, could destroy concepts of an egalitarian service universally free at the time of need. It is therefore crucial that we should consider whether there is anything which can be usefully learned from overseas health experience and introduced to the NHS without undermining concepts which have proved to be of inestimable benefit to the British people over nearly four decades.
