Step-families and Foster Families

Crisis in the family means that the equilibrium of the family has been disturbed in such a way that family members are unable to cope with what is in front of them. Remarriage often proves to be such a crisis. Although remarriage is often seen as an event in which a family, having two parents, is now complete again, the effects are not the same as first family formation and should never be treated as such. If we think of the divorce process as one of changing shape in the family with a resulting rethinking of roles, emotions, tasks and space and the consequent internal readjustment of images of self, then remarriage forms just such another new occasion.
