Abstract
The early years of the new century brought some change in the Institute’s direction. Mr A. W. Still, editor of the Birmingham Daily Gazette, who was President in 1903, directed much of his attention towards salaries, particularly the introduction of a minimum salary and the setting up of a Defence Fund. It was appropriate that after launching his campaign on home ground in Birmingham he quickly followed it up with a visit to Manchester: the district there had been desirous that a working journalist should be elected president and Mr Still was of that stamp.
