Abstract

Since the mature brain is unable to replace lost neurones, chemicals that cause neuronal cell death are of particular concern to industrial and environmental toxicologists. An understanding of events leading to cell lethality may help to prevent irreversible changes in the Central Nervous System (CNS). For experimental investigations, chemicals that appear to show some selectivity in their sites of action are most useful. In this paper a few examples of such chemicals will be given with a discussion of changes induced by them in the CNS.
