Abstract

To attempt a detailed analysis of the customs finally adopted by the various groups of hermits which have been mentioned would be to go too far into monastic and canonical history, but some account may perhaps be given of their character, of how the eremitical communities developed, of how, and for how long, they differed from the more conventional houses of monks and canons regular.
