Abstract
Alvis was founded in 1919 and has concentrated on the upper end of the market, in its early years on sports and racing cars and more recently on military vehicles. Its individual workers, unlike those in volume car production, have always been able to identify their work with particular vehicles or engines, giving them some job satisfaction. It is a medium sized firm of about 1850 employees, the great majority of whom work in a single factory, and its problems and their solutions can fairly be compared with those of Westfalia Separator, the West German firm described in Chapter 4.
