The Transport of CEGB Irradiated Nuclear Fuel

  • Chapter
The Urban Transportation of Irradiated Fuel

Abstract

The Central Electricity Generating Board (CEGB) has nine nuclear power stations — eight based on the Magnox reactor and one on the advanced gas cooled reactor (AGR). Between them they supply nearly 11 per cent of the electricity used in England and Wales. The amount of nuclear fuel used to make that electricity is equivalent to nearly 10 million tonnes of coal a year. A further three AGR stations are shortly due to become operational.
