Abstract

This chapter presents a brief description of the various sources of routine data that exist in the majority of developing countries. The first example relates to hospital discharge data; the other sources are presented in alphabetical order in subsections 3.1.1–3.1.8. There is then a brief comment on (1) population estimates and (2) statistics on some of the determinants of disease. In the standard format of all chapters, there then follow sections on principles of the use of routine data, ways of extending such use, and notes of some of the relevant statistical techniques.
