The Mental Health Act Legislation
At the time it was introduced in 1959 the Mental Health Act was seen as heralding a new era of psychiatric treatment and care. It was a time of great optimism within the discipline of psychiatry with the belief that community care, together with psychotropic drugs would reduce the need for institutional treatment. It was felt that psychiatric knowledge and techniques had advanced sufficiently for them to take their place alongside the other medical disciplines.
