Abstract

There are no intrinsically ‘poetic’ subjects: poetry can be written about anything whatever, and English poets have ranged widely through the universe, through human affairs, through human knowledge. It is true, however, that certain subjects have been particularly popular, including sexual love, nature, religion, public affairs, and death; and something will now be said about the ways in which these major topics have been treated.
