Abstract
Leavesden Hospital, near Watford in Hertfordshire, includes Hillingdon in its catchment area of North West London boroughs. At its peak Leavesden housed 2300 patients, but over the last decade the numbers have dropped to below 1300. This was achieved by the rehabilitation to the community of several hundred long-term patients, by the inevitable deaths amongst the oldest, and by a steadily reducing admission rate.
